Aging in Place

Here are some accessible home modifications that can benefit older adults:

  1. Grab Bars: Install grab bars in bathrooms near toilets, showers, and bathtubs to provide stability and support when standing, sitting, or moving around.
  2. Ramps: If there are steps leading to the entrance of the home, consider installing ramps to make it easier for older adults with mobility issues or using wheelchairs or walkers to enter and exit the house safely.
  3. Wider Doorways: Widening doorways can accommodate mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers, making it easier for older adults to move freely throughout the home.
  4. Non-Slip Flooring: Replace slippery flooring with non-slip materials or add non-slip rugs and mats to reduce the risk of falls, especially in areas prone to moisture like bathrooms and kitchens.
  5. Handrails: Install handrails along staircases and hallways to provide additional support and stability for older adults when navigating different levels of the home.
  6. Adjustable Countertops: Lowering countertops or installing adjustable-height countertops in the kitchen can make meal preparation and cooking more accessible for older adults who may have difficulty standing for extended periods.
  7. Accessible Storage: Consider installing pull-out shelves or drawers in cabinets and closets to make it easier for older adults to access items without having to reach or bend down low.
  8. Zero-Threshold Showers: Replace traditional shower stalls with zero-threshold or curbless showers to eliminate tripping hazards and provide easier access for older adults with mobility issues.
  9. Lever-Style Door Handles: Replace traditional round doorknobs with lever-style door handles, which are easier to grip and require less hand strength to operate.
  10. Smart Home Technology: Incorporate smart home technology such as voice-activated lights, thermostats, and security systems to make it easier for older adults to control various aspects of their home environment without having to physically reach or manipulate switches or controls.

These modifications can help older adults maintain independence, safety, and comfort in their homes as they age in place. Consulting with a professional contractor or occupational therapist can provide personalized recommendations based on specific needs and preferences.
