Aging in Place / Home Shorts Series

The entryway of a home is essential in so many ways. It provides access, safety, identity, security, welcome, comfort, ease, visitability, and sends messages to the rest of the world about who is inside. When designing yours for aging in place here are a few things to consider:

Access–Landscaping ramps are best, they don’t scream “handicapped” or make you a target

Safety–Use Intuitive wayfinding paths with textured surface materials and well drained

Identity – Make House Numbers Large and Visible for delivery, visitors, and emergency personal

Security–Install a Ring Video Doorbell and Lighting in multiple locations to avoid falls

Welcome–Bright Colors and Clear path free of debris and over-grown foliage (WELCOME sign)

Comfort–Have a small table or bench at the side of the front door for packages or sitting/covered area

Ease–Lever Door Handles/Universal design that everyone can benefit from

Visitability–Non-Barrier entry/Zero threshold entryway, at least 32″ doorways
