Research done by Professor of Anatomy, Dr. Marian Diamond at UC Berkeley has shown that older rats placed in non-stimulating environments experienced mental and physical declines.
Yet those rats in stimulating environments (“environmental complexity”) with challenge, newness, and physical exercise, developed new connections between brain cells (dendrites) and new brain cells themselves (“neurogenesis”).
