Handicap Cheaters

I’m a great believer in karma, and the vengeance that it serves up to those who are deliberately mean is generally enough for me.

Handicap Cheaters
I took my elderly relatives on a “long weekend” outing to bring some joy and new experiences to their lives. We stayed in a well-known Motel Chain for 2 nights on the coast of Oregon. They are 90 and 83, both have chronic conditions and challenges ambulating (walking). Often we use a wheelchair or walkers to accommodate them with a ramp-equipped van.

This morning I came out to the parking lot to find a BMW had parked in the Handicap Zone between our WC van and another Handicap designated car. This rendered both parking spaces useless for employing ramps. Important to note, the BMW was NOT handicap designated. Out of all the places to park, they wanted to be near the front door…I’m always baffled by this kind of behavior? And I can only believe karma will play a role in their future.

This quote by former First Lady, Rosalynn Carter always impressed upon me the fact that we live on a continuum from birth to old age (if we are fortunate), and that we pass through each stage being dependent most at the beginning and the end:

There are only four kinds of people in the world – those who have been caregivers, those who are caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers.

~Rosalynn Carter
These kinds of self-centered acts are becoming common in our culture today, and social media shaming seems to be one way to deal with the situation. But, sadly there are those who don’t care. They will not have a crisis of consciousness and lacking *empathy (is there an app for that?) they won’t even look up from their phones to acknowledge other’s needs.
I don’t wish to paint a Dystopian view of the world we live in. There are humanizing acts of kindness such as that of Joey Prusak of Hopkins, Minnesota that are going viral–and that’s wonderful. May his ranks grow, we need more Joeys in the world that appeal to our better angles.
So, my message to  BMW owner with the Oregon LIC plate #526 CAK:
Life has a funny way of leveling the playing field, and Karma is an unfailing boomerang. I hope you grow to a ripe old age and develop some character and empathy along the way. Someday you may be dependent on the kindness of others–let’s hope you will have earned it by then…

*Empathy…I bet there’s an app for that!
