When Aging in Place Doesn’t Work

Howard Gleckman wrote a thought provoking piece on the challenges with aging in place. His premise was that factors having to do with social issues, more so than medical concerns, are often the barriers to aging in place:

-Lack of qualified caregivers

-Lack of services such as basic transportation

-Lack of housing or funds for repairs

-Lack of social networks and isolation

Often aging-in-place doesn’t work for any number of reasons. In our culture we have a tendency to think leaving home for senior housing is somehow giving up. This simply isn’t the case; there are so many stories of how older adults have flourished in assisted living facilities or other care centers. The key is knowing when to to say when, and embracing change as opportunity.
